We are a very large dealer of current, retired
and discontinued Limoges boxes.
Limoges is a city in France, located 150 miles south of Paris.
Originally fashionable in the 17th and 18th centuries, these hinged boxes were
to hold snuff, rouge, scent flacons, cane heads, etuis perfume or small gifts.
Carried by wealthy European men and women, the insides could be quite detailed
with the owner's name and sometimes his portrait.
True Limoges boxes are made by highly skilled
artists who are trained for years before their work is considered exact enough
for production -- from the making of the mold, the painting of each individual
box, the designing of the metal fittings and then fitting them to each box, from
beginning to end. Many are numbered limited editions and this is indicated
on the base of the box, usually with the artists signature or initials.
Below is a very small representation of
some of the Limoges boxes we buy and sell.
